Meanwhile the ground squirrel that has become a major player in our back yard in the collection of ornamental crab apples, was rushing around filling his cheeks with all he could find. "A hah," says I,"A mystery, but I think it is solved. "
"Freshly turned dirt!" he replied. "That squirrel must have done that."
In a bit, he who was sitting in his study said, " I am watching the ground squirrel right now. He is just beginning to go into the backyard from this side."
We both watched and the ground squirrel innocently went from crab apple to crab apple consuming the best of them and then suddenly, he would run to the top of the coyote fence, sit on top and watch, to be sure nothing and nobody was watching him. Meanwhile the big guys, us, were inside watch him watch. When he was sure the coast was clear, down he would go again and collect more fruit.
He didn't go near the big mound of freshly dug dirt.
"Must be a gopher," I thought.
Gathering my trusty camera (phone), I went outside, skirted the snow and took photos of the pile of dirt so you could see it and see if you know who was doing all of this digging in our yard. See if you can tell.
